How to Extend the Life of Your Cashmere Items

How to Extend the Life of Your Cashmere Items
Cashmere is one of the most popular materials for the colder months. The feeling of slipping into a super soft cashmere sweater is one of life's little blessings when the temperature drops, but these cozy fleeces tend to wear out quickly if you don't take good care of them.

Premium cashmere is lightweight yet durable. You'll experience cozy warmth without feeling bulky or itchy. Cashmere garments can last for many years if cared for properly. You'd think precious cashmere would require a lot of care, but what may seem like a daunting task is actually quite easy. Just a few simple tips can extend the life of your cashmere items for many years.

1.How To Wash Cashmere
Assuming you're free of stains, spills, and sweat that day, you can wear your cashmere sweater a few more times before it needs to be washed. Skip the dry cleaners, hand wash is recommended, and if you use the hand wash function on your washing machine, just place the cashmere in a laundry bag (pillowcases will work too) before washing. Use mild detergent and hand soak in cold water, not hot water. Before you start, be sure to check the garment's care label for specific recommendations for that cashmere style.

2.How To Dry Cashmere
When drying cashmere, you should avoid laying the cashmere flat to air dry, away from heat sources and direct sunlight, so as to prevent the cashmere from deforming. Do not twist or wring the cashmere until it has been laid flat to dry. Cashmere is at its weakest when the fibers are damp, so this is the stage that requires the most care. When your cashmere sweater is wet, don't wring it out: this will twist and twist the fabric and your knit will lose its shape.

The basic rule here is not to wring, but to gently press excess water out of the garment, place it on a dry towel and roll it up carefully. Once the towel has absorbed as much water as possible, shape the garment and lay flat in the shade to dry. Keeping cashmere away from heat sources, such as radiators and direct sunlight, will help prevent shrinkage and discoloration.

3.How To Store Cashmere
When it comes to storage, it is best not to hang cashmere as this will affect its shape. Instead, accept it folded like a store, on a shelf to prevent any stretching. Here are some tips for storing cashmere that's been worn but not ready to be washed: you should fold it flat and store it in a wardrobe out of the sun. Don't hang your cashmere items for a long time.

Moths are a major threat to stored cashmere garments. Moths like to chew on cashmere fibers. Residue from body oils and grooming products can attract borers over time. Before you put your cashmere away for the season, wash it and make sure it's completely dry. Then put the cashmere sweaters in a ziplock bag and put them in the refrigerator for 48 hours before putting them away. This kills any moth larvae and protects your knitwear from moths. Cedar balls or shavings can add fragrance, but avoid direct contact with clothing. Do not use mothballs.

4.How to Care for Cashmere
Even the finest cashmere can experience pilling. While it's difficult to completely prevent pilling, careful washing and storage will certainly help reduce it. Typically, scarves don't pill like other clothes because they don't rub as much against other clothes. You can use a razor blade to keep your cashmere lint-free. Pilling will decrease after a few rounds of hand washing. To avoid pills on cashmere items during storage, keep them away from surfaces that cause friction.
